How to Unburn a Vape

A simple guide to fixing a burnt-tasting vape, what you can rescue and when to replace the coil.

The short answer

Stop and soak. Stop vaping, top up the liquid and let the coil re-soak.

Dry hit

A warning sign you can often rescue.

Burnt coil

If truly burnt, the coil needs replacing.

How do you unburn a vape?

If your vape tastes burnt, the cotton wick has been heated while too dry, so whether you can fix it depends on how far it has gone. Stop vaping straight away, check and top up the liquid, then let the coil soak for a few minutes, though if it still tastes burnt the coil is damaged and needs replacing. Catching it early is everything.

It helps to tell two things apart. A dry hit is a muted, slightly roasted taste that warns the wick is drying out, which you can often rescue, while a full burnt hit is harsh and charred, which usually means the cotton is already scorched. This page explains how to rescue a coil, when to replace it, the disposable case and how to stop it happening again, so you waste fewer coils.

Let us look at the rescue steps, replacing, disposables and prevention.

How to rescue a coil

If you act at the first roasted hint, you can often save it. Stop vaping immediately, check the liquid level and top up if it is low, set the device down for a few minutes so the cotton re-soaks, then drop the wattage before trying a gentle puff.

  • Stop at once: the moment you taste burnt, stop vaping.
  • Top up the liquid: a low tank leaves the wick dry.
  • Let it soak: wait a few minutes for the cotton to re-wet.
  • Lower the power: a high wattage scorches the wick faster.

A few primer puffs can help too. With the fire button off, cover the airflow and take a few gentle draws to pull liquid into the cotton, then start back at a low power, since this gives the wick a chance to recover, if it is not already too late.

When to replace the coil

Sometimes the damage is already done. If the burnt taste does not clear after soaking and a lower power, the cotton is scorched, so the only real fix is to replace the coil and prime the new one properly.

A truly burnt taste will not go away, since once the cotton is charred no amount of soaking brings it back. Signs that a coil is spent include a persistent burnt or harsh taste, a drop in flavour and less vapour than usual. When you see those, swap the coil for a fresh one and prime it before use, which means wetting the cotton and waiting before you vape. No coil lasts forever in any case, as the cotton weakens and the wire collects residue over time, so replacing them is simply part of vaping. If you replace a coil and it still tastes off, check that the new one was primed and that the tank is properly filled. A fresh, well-primed coil should taste clean again.

Disposables and prevention

Disposables are a slightly different story. A burnt taste on a disposable usually means the e-liquid has run out, so there is no fix beyond replacing it, while on a refillable device good habits prevent most burnt hits.

On disposables, since you cannot refill or change the coil, a burnt taste generally means the liquid is spent and it is time for a new device. On prevention with a refillable, the main causes of burnt hits are an unprimed coil, a low tank, chain-vaping and too much power. So prime every new coil, keep the tank topped up so the wick ports stay covered, leave a moment between puffs rather than chain-vaping, then stay within the coil rated wattage. Sweet dessert liquids also gunk up coils faster, so they tend to burn sooner. The simple rule is to stop at the first roasted note rather than pushing on, since a dry hit ignored quickly becomes a burnt coil. Good habits save you coils and money.

  • Disposable burnt: the liquid has run out, so replace it.
  • Prime new coils: never fire a dry wick.
  • Keep it topped up: a low tank dries the wick.
  • Do not chain-vape: let the wick re-soak between puffs.

The bottom line: to unburn a vape, stop vaping at the first burnt note, top up the liquid if it is low, then let the coil soak for a few minutes and try again at a lower power. A few primer puffs with the fire button off help pull liquid into the cotton. If the burnt taste does not clear, the cotton is scorched and the coil needs replacing and priming. On a disposable, a burnt taste usually means the liquid has run out, so it is time for a new one.

Frequently asked questions

How do you unburn a vape?

Stop vaping at the first burnt note, then check and top up the liquid if the tank is low. Set the device down for a few minutes so the cotton re-soaks, drop the wattage, then take a few primer puffs with the fire button off to pull liquid into the wick. If the burnt taste clears, you caught it in time. If it does not, the cotton is scorched and the coil needs replacing.

Can you fix a burnt coil?

Sometimes, if you catch it as a dry hit rather than a full burnt hit. A dry hit is a muted, roasted taste that warns the wick is drying, so topping up the liquid and letting it soak can rescue it. A true burnt taste means the cotton is already charred, so no amount of soaking brings it back. At that point the only real fix is to replace the coil and prime the new one.

What is the difference between a dry hit and a burnt hit?

A dry hit is a muted, slightly roasted taste that warns the wick is starting to dry out, so it is often recoverable if you stop and let the cotton re-soak. A burnt hit is harsh and charred, which usually means the cotton has already scorched, something a coil cannot recover from. Think of a dry hit as the warning and a burnt hit as the damage, so stopping at the dry hit saves the coil.

Why does my disposable vape taste burnt?

On a disposable, a burnt taste almost always means the pre-filled e-liquid has run out. Because you cannot refill it or change the coil, there is no real fix, so a burnt-tasting disposable is a sign it is time for a new one. Taking long, hard puffs can also dry the wick faster than it re-soaks, so slowing down and taking shorter puffs helps a disposable last closer to its rated puff count.

How do you stop a vape tasting burnt?

Prime every new coil so you never fire a dry wick, then keep the tank topped up so the wick ports stay covered. Leave a moment between puffs rather than chain-vaping, plus stay within the coil recommended wattage, since too much power scorches the cotton. Sweet dessert liquids gunk coils up faster, so they burn sooner. Above all, stop at the first roasted note rather than pushing on through it.
