Why Is My Vape Bubbling?

A clear guide to why a vape bubbles or gurgles, what a flooded coil is and how to fix it.

The short answer

A flooded coil. Excess e-liquid is pooling around the coil instead of vaporising.

Top cause

Overfilling or over-priming.

Quick fix

Clear the excess and puff more gently.

Why is my vape bubbling?

A bubbling or gurgling sound almost always means your coil is flooded, with more e-liquid around it than the device can vaporise. That extra liquid pools in the coil and airflow, so air bubbles through it instead of turning to vapour, often with spitback and weaker clouds. A gentle crackle is normal, yet loud gurgling is not.

It helps to know this is rarely serious. A flooded coil is one of the easiest vape problems to sort, plus it usually comes from how the device was filled or how you are puffing. This page explains what a flooded coil is, what causes it, how to fix it and how to prevent it, so you get back to smooth, dry draws. As with any vape, this is for adults aged eighteen and over.

Let us look at what it is, the causes, the fixes and prevention.

The noise can be alarming the first time, yet it rarely means the device is broken. In most cases a minute of clearing and a small change of habit sorts it.

What a flooded coil is

The bubbling is a symptom of one underlying issue. A flooded coil means the cotton and chamber hold more e-liquid than the coil can heat, so the excess boils and bubbles instead of vaporising cleanly, which makes the gurgling sound.

  • Gurgling: a bubbling sound as air passes through pooled liquid.
  • Spitback: hot droplets of liquid reaching your mouth.
  • Weak vapour: less vapour than usual as liquid pools.
  • A wet pod: liquid sitting in the airflow or chimney.

A little noise is perfectly normal. A soft crackle or pop simply means liquid is vaporising on the coil, so it is only a problem when the sound becomes a loud, persistent gurgle or you start getting liquid in your mouth, which points to flooding.

The common causes

Flooding usually traces back to a few habits. Overfilling the tank, over-priming a new coil, drawing too hard or letting condensation build up all push extra liquid into the coil, where it pools and bubbles.

On filling, topping a tank or pod right to the brim leaves no air pocket, so pressure forces liquid down into the coil and chimney, which is the most common cause. On priming, adding too many drops to a new coil, especially down the central post, oversaturates it from the start. On technique, drawing too hard, perhaps using a direct-to-lung pull on a tight mouth-to-lung device, sucks more liquid into the coil than it can handle. On condensation, liquid can also gather in the airflow over time and mimic flooding. A worn coil that no longer wicks evenly can bubble too. Knowing which of these applies usually points straight to the fix.

Most people find it traces back to either how they fill the pod or how hard they draw. Once you spot your own habit, the bubbling tends to stop for good.

The fixes and how to prevent it

A flooded coil is quick to clear. Take the pod or tank out, flick it downward over a tissue to clear the excess, wipe the airflow and mouthpiece, then take gentle draws, plus fill correctly next time to stop it returning.

On clearing, remove the pod or tank, hold a tissue over the airflow and flick the device firmly downward a few times to push out pooled liquid, then dab any liquid from the mouthpiece. On cleaning, a cotton bud or rolled tissue down the centre and around the airflow clears trapped juice, then you can leave the device upright for a while to settle. On technique, take slower, gentler draws rather than hard pulls, which lets the coil keep up. On filling, fill only to about 80 to 90 percent so there is an air pocket, then keep liquid out of the central chimney. On priming, use just a few drops on a new coil rather than flooding it. If a worn coil keeps bubbling after all that, fit a fresh pod or coil, since a tired coil cannot wick cleanly any more.

  • Clear it: flick the device downward over a tissue.
  • Puff gently: slow draws let the coil keep up.
  • Fill to 80 to 90 percent: leave an air pocket, avoid the chimney.
  • Prime lightly: a few drops on a new coil, not a flood.

The bottom line: a vape bubbles or gurgles when the coil is flooded, meaning more e-liquid has pooled around it than the coil can vaporise. The usual causes are overfilling, over-priming a new coil, drawing too hard or condensation. To fix it, take the pod or tank out, flick it downward over a tissue to clear the excess, wipe the airflow and mouthpiece, then take gentle draws. Prevent it by filling to about 80 to 90 percent, priming lightly and puffing gently. A worn coil that keeps flooding needs replacing.

Worn coil keeps flooding?

A coil that no longer wicks evenly can bubble no matter what you do. Our vape starter kits, pods and coils are easy to browse, plus the Vape Chaos team are happy to help you find the right replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my vape bubbling?

A bubbling or gurgling sound almost always means your coil is flooded, with more e-liquid around it than the coil can vaporise. The extra liquid pools in the coil and airflow, so air bubbles through it instead of turning to vapour, often with spitback and weaker clouds. It usually comes from overfilling, over-priming a new coil or drawing too hard. It is rarely serious and is one of the easiest vape problems to fix.

How do I fix a bubbling or gurgling vape?

Take the pod or tank out of the device, hold a tissue over the airflow hole and flick the device firmly downward a few times to push out the pooled liquid. Dab any liquid from the mouthpiece, then use a cotton bud to clear the airflow if needed. Leave it upright for a while, then take gentle draws rather than hard pulls. If a worn coil keeps bubbling after that, fit a fresh pod or coil.

What causes a flooded coil?

A flooded coil happens when more e-liquid reaches the coil than it can vaporise. The most common cause is overfilling the tank or pod, which leaves no air pocket and forces liquid into the coil. Over-priming a new coil, drawing too hard, using the wrong inhale style for the device and condensation buildup can all do it too. A worn coil that no longer wicks evenly may also start to bubble and spit.

Is it normal for a vape to make a bubbling sound?

A soft crackle or pop is completely normal and just means e-liquid is vaporising on the coil. It only becomes a problem when the sound turns into a loud, persistent gurgle, perhaps you start getting hot droplets of liquid in your mouth, known as spitback. That points to a flooded coil. Clearing the excess liquid, filling correctly and taking gentler draws usually restores a smooth, quiet vape.

How do I stop my vape flooding?

Fill the tank or pod only to about 80 to 90 percent so there is an air pocket, then keep e-liquid out of the central chimney. When priming a new coil, use just a few drops rather than soaking it, especially down the centre. Take slow, gentle draws instead of hard pulls, then use the right inhale style for your device. If a coil is worn and keeps flooding, replace the pod or coil.
