Why Is My Vape Leaking?
A clear guide to why a vape leaks, the common causes and how to fix and prevent it.
The short answer
Liquid escaping. E-liquid is getting somewhere it should not, usually a seal or fill issue.
Top cause
Overfilling or a loose, worn coil.
Quick win
Fill correctly and store it upright.
Why is my vape leaking?
A vape leaks when e-liquid escapes the pod or tank instead of being vaporised, almost always because of how it is filled, sealed or stored. The usual causes are overfilling, liquid getting into the central airflow, a loose or worn coil, tired seals or leaving the device on its side. The good news is most leaks are easy to fix.
It helps to know a leak is rarely random. It is a sign that liquid is getting past a seal, through a worn coil or out of an overfull tank. This page explains the common causes, how to fix a leak, how to prevent it and when to replace a part, so you get back to clean, dry vaping. As with any vape, this is for adults aged eighteen and over.
Let us look at the causes, the fixes, prevention and replacing.
The common causes
Leaks usually trace back to a handful of things. Overfilling, getting liquid into the central chimney, a coil that is loose or worn, dried-out seals or storing the device on its side are the main culprits.
- Overfilling: no air pocket, so pressure pushes liquid out.
- Liquid in the chimney: filling down the centre tube floods it.
- Loose or worn coil: a poor seal lets liquid seep out.
- On its side: gravity pulls liquid through the wick.
Filling is behind most leaks. Topping a pod or tank right to the brim leaves no air pocket, so pressure forces liquid out, while filling down the central chimney instead of the side port sends it straight through the coil, which is the classic beginner mistake.

How to fix a leak
Start by finding where the liquid is escaping. Take the pod or tank apart, dry every part, reseat the coil or pod firmly, check the seals, then refill correctly, since most leaks clear with a clean and a proper reassembly.
On finding it, note whether the leak is from the bottom or airflow, which points to a seal or coil, alternatively from the mouthpiece, which often means flooding. On cleaning, remove the pod or tank, wipe the base, contacts and chimney with a tissue or cotton bud, then clear any pooled liquid. On the coil, push a plug-in coil in fully so its silicone ring seals, alternatively align a screw-in coil carefully to avoid cross-threading, then keep it finger-tight rather than overtight. On seals, check the O-rings are soft and intact and replace any that are cracked or flattened. On refilling, fill through the side port, leave a small air gap and keep liquid out of the centre. A careful reassembly fixes the large majority of leaks.

Preventing leaks and when to replace
A few habits keep a vape dry. Fill to about 80 to 90 percent, fill through the side port, store the device upright, match the liquid to your coil and replace a worn pod or coil, then leaks become rare.
On filling, leave a small air gap so a light vacuum holds the liquid in, then always fill through the side port rather than the chimney. On storage, keep the device upright, since lying it flat lets gravity pull liquid through the wick, especially in the warmth of a pocket. On liquid, match the thickness to the coil, using 50/50 or 60/40 in pod kits and a higher-VG juice in sub-ohm tanks, because a liquid too thin for the coil seeps through. On temperature, a warm car or radiator can expand the liquid and force it out, so avoid leaving it in heat. On wear, seals and coils do not last forever, so if a pod keeps leaking after a careful clean, fit a fresh pod or coil. Replacing a worn part is often the simplest fix of all.
- Leave an air gap: fill to about 80 to 90 percent.
- Fill the right way: use the side port, not the chimney.
- Store upright: never leave it lying on its side.
- Replace worn parts: a tired pod or coil will keep leaking.

The bottom line: a vape leaks when e-liquid escapes the pod or tank, usually from overfilling, liquid in the central chimney, a loose or worn coil, tired seals or storing it on its side. To fix it, take the device apart, dry every part, reseat the coil firmly, check the seals and refill through the side port with an air gap. Prevent it by filling to about 80 to 90 percent, storing it upright and matching the liquid to your coil. If a worn pod or coil keeps leaking, replace it. This is for adults aged eighteen and over.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my vape leaking?
A vape leaks when e-liquid escapes the pod or tank instead of vaporising, almost always because of how it is filled, sealed or stored. The usual causes are overfilling, getting liquid into the central airflow chimney, a loose or worn coil, dried-out seals, even leaving the device on its side so gravity pulls liquid through the wick. Most leaks are easy to fix with a clean, a proper refill and storing the device upright.
How do I stop my vape leaking?
Fill the pod or tank only to about 80 to 90 percent so there is an air pocket, then fill through the side port rather than down the central chimney. Make sure the coil is seated fully so its seal works, then check the O-rings are intact. Store the device upright, not on its side, then match the e-liquid thickness to your coil. If a worn pod or coil keeps leaking, replace it.
Why does my vape leak when I fill it?
Usually because it has been overfilled or filled down the central chimney. Filling right to the brim leaves no air pocket, so pressure forces liquid out, while pouring e-liquid into the centre tube sends it straight through the coil and out of the base. Fill slowly through the side port, stop before the max line to leave a small air gap, then keep liquid out of the central airflow. That fixes most fill-related leaks.
Why does my vape leak in my pocket?
Leaving a vape on its side, especially in a warm pocket, is a common cause of leaking. When the device lies flat, gravity slowly pulls e-liquid through the coil's wicking ports and out of the airflow. Warmth also expands the liquid, which can force it out. Store and carry the device upright where possible, keep it out of direct heat, then close the airflow if your kit allows it, to keep it from seeping.
When should I replace a leaking pod or coil?
If your vape still leaks after a careful clean, a proper refill, reseating the coil and checking the seals, the pod or coil is probably worn or cracked. Coils and seals do not last forever, since as they age the wick and seals no longer hold liquid as neatly, which leads to leaks. At that point fitting a fresh pod or coil is the simplest fix. A dropped pod with a hairline crack also needs replacing.
