Check the pod
Over 2ml or over 20mg means it is not legal here.
Check the packaging
A nicotine warning must cover a third of the box.
Check the seller
Where you buy matters more than any other test.
How to spot a fake PIXL vape
There are four checks that catch almost every fake. Look at the pod size and nicotine strength, check the nicotine warning covers about a third of the packaging, look for a batch number and manufacturer details, then think about where you bought it.
Two of those checks are legal limits rather than brand details, which makes them the most reliable of all. A device carrying more than 2ml in the pod or more than 20mg of nicotine per millilitre cannot be sold legally in the UK, whether it is counterfeit or simply illegal stock.
This guide runs through each check in order, explains the difference between a fake and an illegal device, covers what happens after you have bought one and sets out how to avoid the problem entirely.
Check one: the numbers on the box
Start here, because it needs no brand knowledge at all. UK rules cap a pod at 2ml, cap nicotine at 20mg per millilitre and cap bottled e-liquid at 10ml, so anything advertised above those figures is not legal for sale here regardless of what the label claims.
Genuine PIXL kits fit inside every one of those limits. A 2ml prefilled pod, 20mg nic salt and a 10ml refill container. A device promising a huge sealed tank or a stronger hit than the legal maximum is telling you what it is before you even open it.
| What to check | Legal in the UK | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Pod capacity | 2ml maximum | Anything larger or a sealed tank |
| Nicotine strength | 20mg per ml maximum | Claims above 20mg |
| Refill container | 10ml maximum | Larger bottles or containers |
| Rechargeable | Required since June 2025 | A sealed throwaway device |
| Replaceable pod | Required since June 2025 | No way to fit a new pod |
That last pair is worth emphasising. Single use disposables have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025, so a sealed device you cannot recharge or repod is illegal stock on its own, quite apart from whether it is a genuine PIXL.
Want to be certain it is genuine?
Vape Chaos is a UK retailer stocking genuine PIXL kits and pods with next day delivery. Call the team if you have any doubt about a device.
The simplest way to avoid all of this is to buy from a shop you can hold to account. The PIXL range at Vape Chaos is genuine UK stock throughout, with the kits and replacement pods listed together.
Check two: the packaging
Compliant packaging is legally required and hard to fake convincingly. A nicotine warning must cover roughly a third of the front and back of the box and the packaging has to carry a batch number, an ingredients list and manufacturer details.
- Nicotine warning: large, clear and covering about a third of each face.
- Batch number: present and legible rather than missing or smudged.
- Manufacturer details: a named company with a contactable address.
- Ingredients and leaflet: included rather than absent.
Spelling and print quality are the giveaway on a lot of counterfeits. Blurred logos, off colours, a warning panel that is too small and typographic errors on the ingredients list all point the same way. Compare against a device you know is genuine if you have one.
Check three: registration and authenticity codes
Legal products leave a paper trail. Every vape sold legally in the UK must be notified to the MHRA and appears on its public database with an identifier and major brands also print authenticity codes you can verify with the manufacturer.
If a product cannot be found on the regulator's database, that is a serious signal rather than an administrative oddity. A scratch panel code that fails verification or no code at all where the brand normally prints one, points the same way.
One change ahead will make this far simpler. From 1 April 2027 e-liquid sold in the UK will need duty stamps, so a physical mark on the packaging will become the quickest check available to anyone.
Check four: the price and the seller
This check catches more fakes than any technical inspection. Counterfeits are sold cheap through informal channels such as social media sellers, market stalls, car boot sales and under the counter, because those routes avoid the accountability a real shop carries.
Where the risk sits
Relative risk of encountering counterfeit or illegal stock by purchase route
A price far below what every UK retailer charges is not a bargain, it is a warning. A genuine PIXL kit sits around £11.99 with replacement pod sets around £7.99 and multibuy deals bring those down modestly rather than dramatically.
How a fake behaves once you use it
Sometimes you only find out after opening it. A counterfeit PIXL often ignores the five press unlock sequence, tastes thin or chemical from the first draw, runs out far short of its claimed capacity or fails within days.
| What you notice | Could be normal | Points to a fake |
|---|---|---|
| Will not unlock | Wrong button for the model | Correct button, still nothing |
| Burnt taste | Pod vaped before priming | Burnt from the first draw after priming |
| Runs out quickly | Heavy use or boost mode on | Spent in a day or two on light use |
| Charging problems | Faulty cable or a blocked port | Erratic charging on a known good cable |
| Device runs hot | Never normal | Stop using it immediately |
| Poor build quality | Not typical of genuine stock | Loose pod, rattling body, rough edges |
Any device that becomes hot, swollen or damaged should be taken out of use straight away rather than investigated further. That applies to genuine kits too, though it is far more common on counterfeits with unverified batteries.
Fake versus illegal
The two get used interchangeably and they are not the same. A counterfeit pretends to be a brand it is not, while an illegal device breaks UK rules on pod size, nicotine strength or the disposable ban regardless of whose name is on it.
Plenty of stock is both. The practical point is that the legal limits are the easier test, because you can apply them to any device in front of you without knowing a thing about how the real packaging should look.
What to do if you have bought one
Stop using it first, then deal with the seller. Do not continue vaping a device you believe is counterfeit, keep the packaging, contact the seller for a refund and report illegal stock to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service.
Reporting matters more than people assume, because it is how illegal stock gets removed from circulation rather than simply moving to the next buyer. If you have any concerns about your health after using a device, speak to a healthcare professional.
For every guide in the range together, our PIXL Guides hub gathers them in one place, covering unlocking, charging, pods, flavours, pricing and troubleshooting.
Several sibling guides help you tell a fault from a fake. Our PIXL vape troubleshooting guide works through the ordinary causes first, the what a PIXL vape is guide sets out what a genuine kit should be, our are PIXL vapes being banned guide explains the rules a legal device has to meet and the PIXL puffs and nicotine guide covers the figures a genuine kit should deliver.
The simplest protection
Every check above matters less than one decision. Buying from an established UK retailer removes almost all of the risk, because a real shop is accountable for its stock, sources from legitimate distributors and has a returns process if something is wrong.
Genuine PIXL kits carry a 2ml pod, 20mg nic salt, 12ml across the pod and refill container, USB Type-C charging and full compliant labelling on sealed packaging. If everything on that list matches and you bought it from a shop you can go back to, you are almost certainly fine.
The bottom line: check the pod is 2ml and the nicotine is 20mg or under, check the nicotine warning covers about a third of the packaging and that a batch number and manufacturer details are present, then consider where you bought it. Anything above the UK limits is illegal here whether or not it is counterfeit. Stop using any device that runs hot or is damaged and report illegal stock to Trading Standards. Vaping is intended for adult smokers and vapers only, never for children, young people or non smokers and anyone with health concerns should speak to a healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions
How do you spot a fake PIXL vape?
Check the pod is 2ml and the nicotine is 20mg per millilitre or under, since anything above those limits cannot be sold legally in the UK. Then check the nicotine warning covers roughly a third of the packaging and that a batch number and manufacturer details are present. Finally consider where you bought it.
What is the difference between a fake vape and an illegal one?
A counterfeit pretends to be a brand it is not, while an illegal device breaks UK rules on pod size, nicotine strength or the disposable ban regardless of whose name is on it. Plenty of stock is both. The legal limits are the easier test, because you can apply them without knowing how the real packaging looks.
Can you check a PIXL vape is genuine online?
Every vape sold legally in the UK must be notified to the MHRA and appears on its public database with an identifier, so a product that cannot be found there is a serious warning sign. Major brands also print authenticity codes that can be verified with the manufacturer and a failed code points the same way.
Why is my new PIXL not unlocking?
Usually because the wrong button is being used, since the lock sits on the base of a PIXL 8000, the boost button on a 6000 and the side button on a Duo 12. If the correct button still does nothing after five fast presses and the device also charges erratically or tastes wrong, a counterfeit becomes more likely.
What should I do if I have bought a fake vape?
Stop using it rather than continuing to vape it and keep the packaging. Contact the seller for a refund and report illegal stock to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service. If you have any concerns about your health after using the device, speak to a healthcare professional.
Are cheap PIXL vapes always fake?
Not always, since genuine multibuy deals do bring prices down. A price far below what every UK retailer charges is a warning though, because counterfeits compete on price. A genuine kit sits around £11.99 with replacement pod sets around £7.99 and real offers reduce that modestly rather than dramatically.
